The residential building BUWOG THE VIEW has won the 2022 BIGSEE ARCHITECTURE AWARD. Designed by LOVE architecture and urbanism, the building is located in Berlin-Grünau and was completed by BUWOG in 2021.
The BUWOG THE VIEW ensemble is one of the most architecturally expressive structures in the 52° Nord development. The ensemble of three buildings is located on a riverside promenade with a view of the Dahme and its waterscape. The focus was on maximising the quality of this waterfront location, combining recreational qualities, social interaction and a sense of community with the calm and serenity of the river.
The BUWOG THE VIEW ensemble consists of three buildings. Building II in the middle was developed by LOVE architecture and urbanism. The highlight: a large-scale, optically floating jetty of eight meters’ depth in front of the actual building, which lends the individual apartments a fairly close proximity to the water such that apartment and water appear to merge. The jetty is a hybrid of private balconies and open spaces and at the same time an element of access, mixing a private area for retreat with space for gathering and socialising.
three materials – wood, aluminium and concrete
All of the apartments extend from front to back and face two directions, allowing residents an intensive experience of the seasons and the day and a maximum view. Emphasising the quality of nature in its singularity is the central idea behind the residential building’s design, while three materials – wood, aluminium and concrete – give visual definition to the structure.
BUWOG Managing Director Eva Weiß: “We are very pleased to receive the 2022 BIGSEE Architecture AWARD for this special project, which with its floating jetties offers both significant architectural quality and a social function as well as space for gathering and socialising.”
Based on the sponge city model
By 2025, around 1,000 rental and condominium apartments will be built in several sub-projects in the 52° Nord development. A comprehensive sustainability concept was already integrated at the start of the development project in 2012. In addition to green rooftops, an efficient local heating grid and the promotion of electromobility, it also includes a 6,000 sqm planted water basin. Based on the sponge city model, rainwater is collected from the surrounding properties, biologically cleansed and returned to the natural water cycle through evaporation.
